NHSN data auditing and training

[break]

If your state health department does not have the personnel to conduct a data audit or your individual facility needs an outside, independent perspective, APIC Consulting can develop and perform an audit focused on specific HAIs relevant to your facilities.  Our team has performed audits and training for all of the facilities within several states, as well as for individual facilities.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests that credible data are vital for prevention, public reporting, and incentivizing improvements in clinical performance.  States use data to assure competence, identify weaknesses in surveillance, and enable improvement by teaching.

For our data audit work, APIC evaluates the appropriate application of NHSN definitions by:

  • Focusing on correct numerator and denominator data
  • Identifying and tracking events
  • Enhancing understanding of NHSN case definitions
  • Minimizing data entry error

Our team of data auditors assesses the completeness and accuracy of data reported to the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) system. The ultimate goal of these efforts is to enhance the quality of the data to support surveillance, prevention, and control of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).

All audit charts are reviewed for quality assurance by two different IPs.  Both auditors are board certified in infection prevention and control (CIC®).

Upon completion of the audit, APIC Consulting will work with your team to review the results, taking time to clarify NHSN requirements and criteria. This will result in more accurate data for your facilities going forward.
